【Tokyo Disney Trivia】Why is it called TOKYO Disney Resort when it’s actually in Chiba? 🏰✨ Access & Travel Time Guide! 🚌💨

I often receive this question in my Instagram and TikTok DMs from international followers: "Where in Tokyo is Tokyo Disney Resort located?"

Well, here is a fun surprise... Tokyo Disney Resort isn't actually in Tokyo! It’s in Urayasu City, Chiba Prefecture! 😳 So many international guests are shocked when they find this out!

Today, I’m sharing the fascinating story behind why it’s named "Tokyo" despite being in Chiba, along with a super helpful access and travel time guide from major travel hubs! ✈️🚄

💡 Why is it named "Tokyo Disney" if it's in Chiba?

There are 3 main reasons behind this unique naming:

  1. Branding as part of the "Greater Tokyo Area" 🌐

    When the park was being built, using the world-famous name "TOKYO" was essential to boost international recognition and position it as a world-class resort!

  2. Unbeatable access from major airports and downtown Tokyo! 🚌

    Even though it's in Chiba Prefecture, it's located right next to central Tokyo (Tokyo Station). Because access from Haneda Airport (Tokyo), Narita Airport (Chiba), and Tokyo Station is so smooth and seamless, it was completely natural to label it as part of the "Tokyo Area"!

  3. Disney’s tradition of using major city names 🏰

    Following Disney’s classic tradition seen in California and Florida—where resorts are named after the nearest major metropolitan city—Japan’s capital city, "Tokyo," was chosen!

Fun fact: In Japan, there are actually several other facilities located in Chiba that carry the name "Tokyo," like Tokyo Narita International Airport and Tokyo German Village! 🤭♪

You might think, "If it's in Chiba, is it hard to get to?" But don't worry at all! Here is a quick breakdown of travel times from key gateways👇

✈️ From the Airports (Limo Bus & Taxi)

If you're traveling with heavy luggage or large suitcases, taking a direct Limousine Bus with zero transfers is definitely the easiest way!

  • From Haneda Airport (HND):

    • Limousine Bus: Approx. 30–45 mins (Direct and completely hassle-free!)

    • Taxi: Approx. 30–40 mins (Around ¥10,000–¥15,000 / approx. $67–$100 USD)

  • From Narita Airport (NRT):

    • Limousine Bus: Approx. 60–80 mins

    • Taxi: Approx. 60–70 mins (Around ¥25,000–¥30,000 / approx. $167–$200 USD — flat-rate taxis recommended!)

🚄 Arriving by Shinkansen (Bullet Train) from Kyoto/Osaka (via Tokyo Station)

If you're taking the bullet train from the Kansai region (Kyoto or Osaka), you'll first arrive at JR Tokyo Station!

  • From JR Tokyo Station to Tokyo Disney Resort (JR Maihama Station):

    • Train (JR Keiyo Line or Musashino Line): Approx. 15 mins (Only 13 mins on the Rapid train!)

    • 💡 Pro Tip: Transferring from the Shinkansen platform to the Keiyo Line platform inside Tokyo Station requires a 10 to 15-minute walk. Make sure to leave a little extra time for the walk inside the station!

 "I couldn't get a park ticket," "It's my last day and I just want to shop before heading to the airport," or "I want to make the most of my arrival day!" — If this sounds like you, I have the perfect spot! 🐭🏰 Located right in front of the JR Maihama Station gates, this is one of the largest Disney Stores in Japan!  ✨ 📍 Basic Info & Access It's located at the "Entry Plaza" on the 2nd floor of Ikspiari.
